David Kilgour - River of Sound

 

Short bio:
David Kilgour (born 1961 in Ranfurly, New Zealand) is a guitarist, singer, and songwriter best known as co-founder of the legendary Dunedin band The Clean. Alongside his brother Hamish, Kilgour helped define the jangly, lo-fi sound that became central to the "Dunedin Sound" and the rise of Flying Nun Records in the early 1980s. His shimmering guitar work and understated melodic sense have influenced generations of indie musicians worldwide.

Outside The Clean, Kilgour has built an impressive body of solo work and recordings with his long-running band The Heavy Eights, spanning from the dreamy textures of Here Come the Cars (1991) to later acclaimed albums like End Times Undone (2014) and Bobbie's a Girl (2019). Known for blending pastoral calm with bursts of rock energy, he has also collaborated with poet Sam Hunt on Falling Debris (2009). Kilgour's music remains both intimate and expansive, rooted in New Zealand’s landscapes yet resonant far beyond.


I've been a fan of David Kilgour since first hearing The Clean way back in the 1980s. Of the three members of The Clean, I've enjoyed his work outside of the band the most, from his first solo album "Here Come the Cars" up until his most recent release in 2019 with The Heavy Eights "Bobbie's a Girl". Hopefully that isn't his final release and he'll see fit one day to bless us with another gem. Every album is definitely worth investigating, my personal favourites are "Sugar Mouth", released in 1994, and "Left by Soft" released in 2011.

I should have posted this a couple of weeks back, but I had a bit of a health issue (nothing too serious) which put a temporary halt to compiling this collection. Finally feeling well enough, I finished compiling last night what I believe is a fitting tribute to David Kilgour. As usual, origin of each track & year of release is tagged in the music files and noted in the download folder. Hope you enjoy this latest anthology. Cheers!
