The 34th Anniversary of Shimmy Disc 1987 - 2021

Short bio:
Shimmy Disc is a New York City-based independent record label founded in 1987 by Mark Kramer. Before it was sold to the Knitting Factory, artists like Bongwater, Daniel Johnston, Fly Ashtray, Galaxie 500, King Missile, Boredoms, Ruins, Ween, Gwar, The Semibeings, When People Were Shorter and Lived Near the Water and Uncle Wiggly recorded on the label. The label also released compilations albums such as "Rutles Highway Revisited (A Tribute To The Rutles)", 1990, which featured various artists from the label, and also introduced new artists like Paleface.

In 2020, Kramer revived the Shimmy Disc label in partnership with Joyful Noise Recordings with their first release Songs We Sang In Our Dreams, the debut album of Kramer's project with Xan Tyler, Let It Come Down.

Originally this was going to be a sequel to the Kramer solo anthology I posted here just over a year ago. The idea was to feature a compilation which featured the many bands he's been a member of, plus his many collaborations with the likes of Daevid Allen and Dogbowl. After compiling a few tracks I thought it would be even better if I made a Shimmy Disc compilation instead. This proved to be a much harder task, as there were many albums I had to find (a few still in storage), and some I only had on vinyl. So, I apologise in advance for the 3 tracks I ripped from vinyl, these being the ones by Jellyfish Kiss, Walkingseeds and When People Were Shorter and Lived Near the Water.

All told this took me over 3 weeks to compile/complete. Some of you may query the absence of some bands, so I will explain why they are missing. To qualify they had to be albums which were released on the label first, or simultaneously with another label in other parts of the world. So there's no Shockabilly or Velvet Monkeys here, as they were released on other labels long before Shimmy Disc existed. No track from Galaxie 500's debut album features either, as the album came out originally on the label Aurora, appearing on Shimmy Disc a year later. Disc 1 consists of releases from the "peak" years of the late 80s to early 90s. Disc 2 has a smattering of those tracks plus a few favourites from the mid to late 90s, concluding with half a dozen tracks released on the recently revived label.

Thanks to Manerg for his invaluable advice when I was constructing the compilation artwork, he came up with the idea of featuring the Shimmy logo in different colours. Part of the artwork (the border) was inspired by the very first compilation released on the label, "The 20th Anniversary of the Summer of Love 1987–1967". I also had the idea of having a "ghostly" image of Kramer in the background. As usual info containing the origin of each track & year of release is tagged in the music files and in the download file. I hope you all enjoy this compilation featuring so many weird and wonderful songs.

The Asteroid No.4 - Imagination Station 1998-2020

Bio:
The Asteroid No.4 are an American psychedelic band based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Originating from Philadelphia in the latter half of the 1990s, the band began their relocation to the west coast in 2011. Since forming, the band has endured several lineup changes. Over the last ten years, however, they have consistently included Scott Vitt (vocals, guitar), Eric Harms (guitar), Adam Weaver (drums, vocals), Matty Rhodes (bass, vocals), and most recently, John Ziemba (guitars, vocals).

The band is known for their dynamic live act, integrating multi-textured guitars and reverb-drenched vocal harmonies over an unwavering rhythm section. However, it’s been their prolific recording output, including what will soon be their ninth full-length album, that’s helped build their dedicated fan base within the flourishing underground psychedelic scene. With well over a dozen compilation appearances, digital-only rarity releases, and multiple singles and EPs, the band is said to improve with each release.

The Asteroid No.4’s sound has been called a “hypnotic hybrid of several different genres filtered through the kaleidoscope of all things psychedelic.” Whether it be “Krautrock”, “shoegaze”, folkrock, or even the occasional dabbling in “Cosmic” countryrock, the band have never shied away from wearing their influences squarely on their sleeves.

I was a bit of a latecomer to The Asteroid No.4, not hearing them until around 2004/05, when their 2nd album "King Richard's Collectibles" (released in 2001) was recommended to me. They've released several albums and singles/EPs since forming in the latter half of the 90s, they have a new album scheduled for release this year titled "Northern Songs" which I'm really looking forward to. On hearing about this forthcoming release, I figured it was time I compiled some of my favourite tracks by the band. This was another tough one to compile with so many good tracks to choose from. All albums are worth getting, even the much maligned 3rd album, the country rock influenced "Honeyspot". If I had to choose my 2 favourites, they'd be "Hail to the Clear Figurines" from 2011 and their self-titled album released in 2013.

One minor problem with this collection was how to name the band. They have a habit of using variations on their name for each release, usually as The Asteroid #4 or The Asteroid No.4. I chose the latter as that is the version they use on their website plus on their most recent releases. As usual, info containing track origin & year of release is tagged in the music files and in the download file. I hope you all enjoy!

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Murder Ballads & Happy Endings

Bio:
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci formed in 1991 in Carmarthen, Wales. Their best known lineup was Euros Childs (vocals, keyboards), his sister Megan Childs (violin, backing vocals), John Lawrence (guitar, vocals), Richard James (bass), and Euros Rowlands (drums). The band was formed by Euros Childs, James and Lawrence whilst still at school, and they have seen a number of lineup changes (perhaps most notably, the departure of Lawrence following 1999's Spanish Dance Troupe) during their existence. The band split in 2006.

Sounding like a bizarrely sweet and whimsical cross between progressive rock, psychedelia, and pure pop, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci were one of the most original and distinctive bands to emerge from the vital post-Brit-pop Welsh scene of the mid-'90s. Gorky's music followed unconventional time signatures and structures, as well as instrumentation (boasting everything from droning moog synthesizers to slurring trombones and steel guitars) and melodic patterns. Furthermore, the band's lyrics were rarely about conventional pop/rock subjects, and they frequently sang in Welsh, which made their already odd music sound even more alien to most listeners.

With their 1997 album Barafundle, the wide-ranging instrumentation remained ("Diamond Dew" has a prominent part for the jaw harp) and there were still psychedelic touches, but the album as a whole was more laid back than their earlier work, tending more towards folk music. This gentler direction was largely maintained and refined in their later records, though the occasional poppier and rockier number, such as "Poodle Rockin'" continued to crop up.

This was yet another collection which took some time to compile, I originally had the idea of doing a Gorky's anthology 6 months ago. Several aborted attempts meant I kept putting it on hold until a week ago when I decided to have one last go. I honestly don't know where I was going wrong with those previous attempts, maybe I was just taking the wrong approach, but this time around I found it much easier to compile. This is in no way a definitive compilation, like Elf Power or Vic Chesnutt I had a large back catologue to choose from. For some Gorky's fans there'll be a few glaring omissions, but I could easily have picked another 27 tracks and come up with a collection equal to this one.

Thanks to Manerg for his suggestions/advice for the artwork, and for putting up with my endless ramblings whenever I need that advice! Without his help a few of these collections might never have seen the light of day or been somewhat inferior. As ever, info containing track origin & year of release is tagged in the music files and in the download file. Take care everyone, hope you enjoy, and stay safe!
